Speaking after a report into historical child abuse was leaked from the Department of Health, The Foyle MLA said: “The details of this report are horrific and awful to read. I really worry that some of those vulnerable people are still at risk and that those accused could still be working in the healthcare sector with vulnerable people.
“A full explanation is required from Hugh Connor, the current Chair of the Child Safeguard Board, about what information he withheld from the police and it is down to the investigating body to determine what information is deemed relevant or irrelevant, not the Health Minister.
“We cannot help but wonder if the police had more information in the past, would there have been a different outcome to their investigations and would those responsible have been prosecuted?
“I’m sure a lot of victims have tried their best to forget about this horrific abuse, but unfortunately the way in which this report was sat on and leaked is undoubtedly going to bring back horrible memories and trauma to them.
“The Minister has criticised the way in which the report was leaked and has been calling for people to be fully open and honest with the public, but yet he is defending the actions of Hugh Connor, a man who, it appears, hasn’t been fully open and honest with the police.
“My main concern now is that no such thing can happen again but the way the information hasn’t been disclosed, even to the minister, doesn’t do a lot to instil confidence in members of the Assembly’s Health Committee or the general public.”
