Gallagher concerned at Lisnaskea jobs risk

SDLP Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA Tommy Gallagher has said his thoughts are with employees whose thirty jobs are under threat at the Clarke Group quarry in Lisnaskea and added that businesses in the west are not getting the help they deserve from DETI to help them through difficult financial times

He said: “My thoughts are immediately with the employees at this difficult time, when their jobs are at risk. Unfortunately, this company, which has an excellent record in providing local employment, has had to make difficult decisions because of the financial situation in the industry beyond its control.

“This company has been one of the main-stays of the south-west Fermanagh economy for a very long time. The construction industry, like many others in Fermanagh and South Tyrone has felt the downturn very keenly. The recession has put that industry under very severe pressure. Many businesses in Fermanagh and South Tyrone remain vulnerable in the present circumstances.

“I reiterate my firm belief that a business taskforce for the west is a must to protect our jobs and businesses and seek to garner further investment. Unfortunately, when I called for this taskforce in the past, it was voted down by other parties in the Assembly. This really needs to be looked at once again as does the amount of procurement contracts issued to businesses in the west.

“Despite the best efforts of this firm to diversify, some parts of its operation are still very vulnerable. This in turn creates uncertainty over jobs and that’s a position where nobody wants to be in.”
