Conall at a glance
Born in Dublin Conall spent his formative years in Malaga, Spain. He is the former managing director of Weber Shandwick Northern Ireland. He is a past Chairperson of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations in Northern Ireland.
He is a well know political commentator and his blog, O’Conall Street, is one of Ireland’s leading politics and current affairs blogs. Conall became the first public relations practitioner in the North of Ireland to win the European Public Relations Award in 2008. He has also won numerous British and Irish awards for his professional work. Conall lives in South Belfast. He is married with three small children.
Political Career
Conall was Director of Communications for the SDLP from 1996 to 1999 a time that included the negotiations running up to the Good Friday Agreement, subsequent referendum and assembly elections. He served as a Special Adviser in the first Power Sharing Executive in the North of Ireland, advising the Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development.
He is a former Vice-president of the European Young Socialists (ECOSY) and National Secretary of Labour Youth. He is the chairperson of the SDLP’s Balmoral branch, the largest in the party.
Conall replaced Carmel Hanna as the MLA for South Belfast in January 2010. He is the party's education spokesman and in May 2011 was appointed to the Policing Board.
