Speaking after the official opening of the station, he said: “We have waited a long time for this station and I must say I am impressed, not just by the building but by the fact that at long last we have adequate parking there.
“The re-opening of the Malahide viaduct and resumption of normal timetabling has led to an upsurge in customer numbers from Newry, helped by imaginative fare promotions. Public transport has got to break out of the vicious circle of falling service and rising fares. Investment is needed not just in better timetabling but in the culture and habit of public transport through better marketing and promotions. There are benefits for all of society and Translink investment must not be decided on the basis of a narrow business case. This is a job for the Executive.
“Enterprise journey times to Dublin and Belfast must be improved, but it should not end there. The last train from Belfast to Newry gets here at 7:30 in the evening, even though trains are stopping at Portadown until midnight. The first train to Dublin will not get anybody there in time for normal work. Early-morning cross-border road traffic is enormous and there is no reason why commuter trains to Belfast should not start from Dundalk and commuter trains to Dublin start from Newry.
