Dallat: NI Water has no credibility left

The announcement by the Consumer Council that it has withdrawn from the Water Stakeholders Partnership Agreement (WSPA) has drawn a response from the SDLP Spokesperson on the Environment John Dallat MLA.

Mon 20th September

The East Derry MLA said: “This is a clear indication that the wheels have come off the water wagon in a big way.  It appears that the Consumer Council has decided to abandon ship and my only surprise is that they didn’t do so a lot sooner.

“Millions of pounds of consumers’ money have gone down the plughole leaving a legacy of debt for future taxpayers.

“This announcement means that NI Water has no credibility left. Rather than focus on a decent water service to the public, it is embroiled in potential legal battles with former directors it has treated disgracefully.

“Minister Murphy must make a statement and should not plan to simply walk away from a problem that he presided over for several years showing no effective leadership skills of any kind.

“I will be asking for an early meeting with Antoinette McKeown, the Chief Executive of the Northern Ireland Consumer Council, to establish exactly what she and the organisation plans to do to ensure that the consumer is not left completely at the mercy of an organisation which is not fit for purpose and has been continually immersed in controversy which has fulfilled no purpose but has caused millions of pounds.”
