Mr Durkan, who is a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Diabetes, has also welcomed today’s launch of a 10 year strategy to tackle obesity in Northern Ireland.
He said: “I am deeply concerned that one in five students leaving primary school is now obese.
“I therefore welcome today’s 10 year strategy to tackle what has been called ‘an obesity time bomb’ among our children.
“Diabetes is a growing health problem here in the North and around the world. Indeed, there are approximately 4,400 people diagnosed with diabetes in Derry alone.
“I have consistently supported campaigns by Diabetes UK both locally and in the House of Commons. I am also a strong supporter of the ‘Get Serious About Diabetes’ campaign and have met with the North West Voluntary Group to help raise awareness of the important steps people need to take to lead a healthier lifestyle.
“It is vital that we ensure both the public and government recognise just how serious diabetes is.
“I am therefore calling on the government to introduce a tax on food and drink with high levels of added sugar, with the profits from such a tax going to diabetes research.”
