Mr Durkan, who is unable to access his constituency office on Bishop Street due to security measures, said: “I utterly condemn those responsible for these security alerts. All they are doing is bringing disruption and damage to the life of the city.
“They have stopped people going about their lawful business and offices and shops doing their work. They have disrupted the journey to work for others and the have prevented children from getting to school.
“Whatever cause those responsible think they are serving, they need to know that their methods today are resented and rejected by the people of this city.
“Old people living in sheltered housing have had to be evacuated this morning and taken elsewhere in some fear and distress.
“There is no patriotism in that. Those responsible might claim to act in defence of the nation; the reality is they are acting in defiance of the nation and with complete disregard for the rights and interests of the people of this city.”
