Mr Durkan said: “This is welcome news which will no doubt be of comfort to residents in the Letterkenny Road area who are at risk of flooding.
“Over the past few years severe winters have increased the incidences of flooding in this area of the city.“Following concerns from a number of constituents I contacted Roads Service, NI Water, the Rivers Agency and Derry City Council.
“I am therefore pleased at the positive responses from these agencies and the acknowledgement that the old storm drain running to the river is in poor condition and in need of replacement.
“Roads Service has indicated to me they are currently working to replace the section of drain under the Letterkenny Road and that they are also in discussions with relevant parties to reach an agreement to renew the pipe the whole way to the River Foyle.
“In periods of heavy downpour, flooding in this area has obviously caused distress to residents.
“I therefore welcome the commitment to commence these important works which aim to reduce the risk of flooding for houses in this area.”
