Kelly condemns knife attack on officer

SDLP Upper Bann MLA Dolores Kelly has spoken out against the perpetrator of an attack on a PSNI officer, where the policeman suffered serious knife-wounds to his head while responding to an emergency call on the Kilwilkie Estate.

Sun 5th February

Mrs Kelly said: “Although this arose out of a domestic incident which the policeman was attempting to deal with, violence of this or any description is not the way to resolve an argument and it will not be tolerated by those seeking a peaceful community.

“Reports indicate that this was a very complex situation involving a man locking himself into a house with two young children, so obviously my thoughts and prayers are with those children as well as the officer and his family.

“However, I understand that other officers at the scene were pelted with bricks and petrol bombs.

“This speaks to a level of organized attack which is distressing when the police are trying to help the community first and foremost.

“Nevertheless, I commend them for their selfless attempts to stop a bad situation getting worse and call on all sides of the community to call a halt to violent attacks on emergency service personnel.”
