The South Belfast MLA said: “The principle duty to defend and uphold those who survived abuse when in institutional care lies with the Northern Ireland Executive.
“Given the events of the past week it is essential that the Health Minister brings forward specific recommendations to provide those who have suffered whilst in the care of institutions, run or managed by Catholic orders, with access to the truth and justice.
“We now need a step change from the Minister for Health and the Executive. He must acknowledge publicly that it is the duty of the Executive to uphold the rights of survivors of abuse and to seek redress and justice for them.
“The state also has a duty to pursue those who perpetrated these crimes against innocent children and to seek redress from those institutions, orders and dioceses which were employing the abusers during this dark period of our history.
“The survivors need action now from the Minister and the Executive.”
