McDevitt: NI Water interim appointment should be short

SDLP Regional Development spokesperson Conall McDevitt said the appointment of an interim chairperson to NI Water should be for the minimum period possible.

Fri 6th August

He said: “We note the appointment of Padraic White who comes with strong credentials as former managing director of the IDA. While recognising for the need for an interim appointment given the current circumstances of the company, we are naturally concerned that in making it, Minister Conor Murphy does not have to go through the full and proper process for a permanent public appointment.

“The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has raised serious questions of corporate governance and business processes in NI Water as well as highlighting potential issues for the Department of Regional Development concerning its relationship with the previous NI Water Service in the period when it was being established as a GoCo (government company). Interim appointments by the Minister may be necessary to establish the integrity of the board of NI Water in the short term, but given the crisis of confidence in the Department’s handling of the establishment of the company they should be for the minimum period necessary.”
