McGreevy proposes greater support for young drivers

SDLP Crotlieve Cllr Connaire McGreevy has has his proposal backed that the Newry and Mourne Council tackles the high cost of driving for young people in the area.

Fri 9th September

Speaking following a motion that he proposed at Council on Monday, Cllr McGreevy said:

“There is inequality between young drivers in rural areas in Newry and Mourne and other young people in England and Wales with higher car insurance premiums than our counterparts over the water.

“The average cost for young rural drivers  in Newry and Mourne is £1,111 compared to £373 in Scotland and £377 in Wales which is totally unfair and unjust.

“I am calling on the Justice Minister to investigate issues such as referral fees by accident management companies and why damage only claims are not heard in lower courts to keep legal costs down.

“Across this district, be it Crossmaglen, Rostrevor or Kilkeel, there is a dependency on the motor car.  In these economic times especially people are having to travel further for work.  We have an inadequate public transport network and young people have to buy older cars with higher CO2 output which means they pay higher car tax too.

“All in all, higher motor costs need to be tackled in the North and the inequality that younger drivers experience here must be removed as a matter of urgency.”
