Quigley: City centre roads are ‘going to pot’

SDLP Derry City Councillor Helen Quigley has called on the Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy to take immediate action to repair the growing number of potholes in the city centre.

Tue 19th January

Cllr Quigley said:

"Main thoroughfares in the city centre are being allowed to decay and ‘go to pot’.

"For example, there are potholes all the way up Clarendon Street and on the Northland Road. I have also encountered ones recently on Spencer Road in the Waterside.

"This has come to particular attention in the aftermath of the very cold weather we have had over the past month.

"Some roads are in a very dangerous state and concerns are not just about damage to cars. The poor level of maintenance could even put lives at risk.

"It is all very well posing for the cameras cutting the ribbon on a new piece of dual carriageway, but the Regional Development Minister is responsible for all of our roads, including here in the city centre.

"I have been lobbying hard for road improvements for sometime now, but despite this Roads Service have yet to take the necessary action.

"I am therefore calling directly on Conor Murphy and his Department to take immediate action and to carry out these improvements as a matter of urgency."
