Quigley: Roads Service must tackle icy conditions in Derry City

SDLP Derry City Councillor Helen Quigley has called on Roads Service to set up a contingency plan to tackle the icy road conditions in the city.

Mon 4th January

She said: “We are now into the fourth week of this cold snap and roads, particularly side streets, in Derry City remain untreated with salt or sand and are proving treacherous.

“As a result a lot of people including the elderly and the disabled are housebound and our local taxi industry is feeling a serious pinch as drivers are unable to collect passengers in the majority of housing estates and side roads in the city centre.

“I appreciate the fact that resources are an issue for DRD but Roads Service must get a contingency plan in place for Derry City as soon as possible to ensure that all urban roads are salted and yellow salt boxes are strategically placed and refilled in certain areas.

“I would encourage people to look out for their neighbours at this time, particularly the elderly and those living alone.”
