The initiative which lasts from 16th – 22nd September is designed to promote public transport, cycling and walking.
She said: “I would urge as many citizens as possible to get active and support European Mobility week.
“Participants can do a number of things from leaving the car at home, using public transport, walking or cycling in their daily duties.
“We have become increasingly reliant on our cars for journeys even short ones. More driving means more congestion, more accidents and more pollution. Greater car use also means less exercise which contributes to poor standards of health.
“The main theme of European Mobility Week – ‘Travel Smarter, Live Better’ is a wake-up call to us all to consider how our travel choices impact on the urban environment and quality of life and help us make smarter, healthier travel choices.
“I would encourage as many schools, colleges and businesses to join in this initiative for the good of our environment and to promote a healthier way of life.”
