Following the discovery of a suspicious container near Down Cathedral, Ms Ritchie said: “Those who cause these alerts are cynical and cowardly individuals.
“Fortunately this did not cause people to be evacuated and only delayed a service at the cathedral, but it is abhorrent to me that anyone would cause such a disturbance in the town, which is usually calm and tranquil.
“This is a time when the people of Downpatrick should be making the most of the town’s rich Patrician and Early Christian heritage as we move towards St Patrick’s day and as the Northern Ireland Tourist Board’s “NI2012: Our Time, Our Place” promotion is encouraging communities to celebrate what makes them great.
“We should be coming together as a community, not having to put up with attempts to divide us.
“I call on anyone with any information to pass it on to the PSNI immediately.”
