Ritchie vows to fight for farmers

SDLP South Down MP Margaret Ritchie has said she will continue to work hard on behalf of Northern Irish farmers as discussions go on regarding CAP reforms and issues surrounding conacre land.

Thu 1st March

Speaking after Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Questions at the House of Commons, Ms Ritchie, who is NI’s sole representative on the EFRA select committee at Westminster, said: “I was pleased to secure assurances today from the EFRA Minister that her Minister of State has raised the issue of Northern Irish conacre land with officials in Brussels.

“A considerable amount of the North’s farming land is in conacre and, under the new proposals being put forward, funding will go to the owner rather than the tenant farmer who actually works the land, which is a system which is not only wide open for abuse but also deeply unfair.

“I will continue to press for the rights of farmers and ensure that their work is sustained as a vital part of the Northern Irish economy.”
