SDLP welcomes innovative investment package for Belfast

SDLP Group Leader on Belfast City Council Cllr Tim Attwood has warmly welcomed the stimulus and investment package announced by Belfast City Council this morning at the Waterfront Hall.

The Upper Falls Cllr stated: “Given the economic downturn, the need for united political leadership and bold, decisive action has never been greater in Belfast. 

“As political representatives across Belfast we listen to the real concerns and fears of people every day. Businesses are suffering, unemployment is rising and people are facing spiralling debt problems, inequalities in health are as great as ever and will worsen under the proposed welfare reforms.

“There is a responsibility on us, as political leaders in Belfast City Council, to respond to these concerns and make decisions which can have a positive impact on people’s lives, their families and the entire community.

“The Stimulus Package is an  ambitious and innovative political agenda which can help improve the lives of everyone in our community. Even the process in reaching agreement about the package has been a positive one. Party Groups and offices have shown an energy and determination to stretch ourselves and the Council to deliver a package of genuinely additional programmes and investments which will support regeneration, employability and communities in need.

“This package must be the beginning of a process of radical change in the way we do business in the City. We should be ambitious for Belfast and set out a vision for Belfast and our neighbourhoods over the next 20 years.

 

“The Council alone is not going to resolve all the social and economic issues facing Belfast. However with strong political leadership we can demand a more integrated strategy from government, statutory partners and the community sector. The need for an integrated strategy for the City has never been greater. Together, we can develop a single strategy for Belfast which tackles historic inequalities, creates jobs and provides hope for all our communities.”
