Karen McKevitt MLA

Karen McKevitt

MLA for South Down

SDLP Spokesperson on Culture, Arts and Leisure

Karen McKevitt was elected to Newry and Mourne Council in 2005. Her abilities were recognised at an early stage and soon she was given a number of high profile roles including chairmanships of Planning, Building Control and District Development. Her political progress saw her elevated to her current position as Deputy Mayor.

Married to Patrick, the proud working mother of five is fully aware of family needs and the pressures facing households at present. She replaced the retiring PJ Bradley in the Assembly in 2011.

Karen is committed to seeing the Narrow Water Bridge project come to fruition and supports programmes to upgrade the A2 Newry to Kilkeel route and the main arterial from Newry to Downpatrick.

She believes that the rural dweller should be allowed to live in the countryside in which they were born and feels that there must be a greater focus on the farming industry in the Assembly.

Karen will be pushing for greater incentives for farmers to participate in renewable energy programmes, increased promotion of hillwalking tourism in the Mournes as well as investment in the greens sector including schemes to help tradesmen diversify their skills to work in this industry.
