SDLP Chairman Joe Byrne is the Party’s regional development spokesman.
Joe, a former teacher and economist, lectured in Economics and Business Studies in Omagh College of Further and Higher Education for over 20 years. Joe is a GAA enthusiast and coached the Omagh College Gaelic Football team during his time at the college.
Joe was elected as an Assembly Member in 1998, serving West Tyrone until 2003. Joe also served his local constituency of Omagh as a Councilor from 1993 to 2005. In 1997, Mr. Byrne stood as the SDLP Westminster candidate for West Tyrone, beaten narrowly in the general election.
Joe is an active member of Omagh Chamber of Commerce, Club Tyrone and Omagh Boys and Girls Youth Club.
Mr. Byrne has said he plans to fight for bread-and-butter issues for the people of West Tyrone in the Assembly. Joe is only too aware that the recession continues to bite hardest in regional areas such as West Tyrone. Joe will place job security at the very heart of his work at in the Assembly whilst working to protect education and vital frontline services.
