John at a Glance:

John is happily married to Anne and has two sons and a daughter. A native of Kilrea, John was educated at Our Lady of Lourdes Secondary School, Ballymoney, North West College of Further and Higher Education, The University of Ulster, University College Galway and Harvard University.

John was formerly a teacher of business studies in Carndonagh Technical College, Co Donegal from 1968 to 1974 and St Paul's College, Kilrea from 1975 until 1998.

 Political Career:

John was elected to Coleraine Borough Council in 1997 before serving as mayor in 2001 before stepping down in 2010.

Elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly in1998 John sits on the Stormont Environment Committee for which he is party spokesperson. John also is a member of the Assembly Public Accounts committee and is a former chair of the Assembly’s Audit Committee. He is also in his second term as deputy speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly

John is director of Kilrea Enterprise Group and Treasurer of Kilrea, Rasharkin & Dunloy Credit Union Limited.

John is a member of St Vincent de Paul and Kilrea Athletic Association.
