KELLY: PUBLIC LET DOWN WHILE HOUSING NEED GROWS

SDLP DSD spokesperson Dolores Kelly has said the department cannot be allowed to continue to let down those in housing need whilst the number of people in housing poverty grows.

The Upper Bann MLA was speaking at the SDLP’s Annual Conference 2014:

“Good housing is critical to good health. Ever-increasing waiting lists tell us that there’s need for this Executive to re-energise the housing market to build more social housing as Alex Attwood and Margaret Ritchie both did whilst they were Social Development ministers.

“Unfortunately, at the moment, we need to be every vigilant about new practices of discrimination in housing, for example, the massaging of housing waiting lists in North Belfast.

“Fair access to housing was one of the major civil rights issues that led to the formation of the SDLP. It was the SDLP in the 1970s that insisted housing should be taken away from local authorities who had proved unfit to discharge their responsibilities.

“People who are living in extreme housing stress know the reality of their situation and so do we. The SDLP will continue to press the Minister, the Assembly and the Executive to take action to address the failings of the DSD under the guidance of the DUP. We will not stand idly by as the public continue to be let down and whilst housing need grows.”
