McGlone: Executive must show leadership on construction

SDLP spokesperson for Trade & Enterprise and chairperson of the all-party working group on construction, Patsy McGlone MLA, has called on the Executive to show leadership following the Stormont House Agreement. Mr McGlone has urged the Executive to use a portion of the funds secured by the agreement to address the lagging construction industry in the North.

Mr McGlone said: “We should now be examining a long term strategy for maintaining construction work in Northern Ireland. Every week planes are full of skilled construction workers, electricians, plumbers and engineers departing to England for work, not to mention the thousands of others living in economic exile in Canada, Australia and the USA.

“The reinvigoration of our construction industry would require the creation of a cross-departmental task force involving the strategic investment board to source financing and investigate potential projects. This would also be essential to roll out capital projects and provide the necessary infrastructure and skills to take advantage of the potential that would come from the devolution of corporation tax. The establishment of such a taskforce would mark a welcome step in developing a sustainable and thriving construction industry.

“Any proactive step would need to be built on the foundations of a cohesive Executive. The public need to see their Executive working for them, rather than ministers spending vital public funds on costly lawsuits to score party political points.

“All parties who worked towards achieving the Stormont House Agreement have vigorously asserted that they were working in the best interest of the people of Northern Ireland. It is time now for them to demonstrate it.”
