McKevitt: Open Championship is a game changer

SDLP Culture, Arts and Leisure spokesperson Karen McKevitt MLA has said that the expected announcement that the Open Championship will be coming to Northern Ireland is a game changer for the local industries.

Ms McKevitt said: “This is fantastic news, not only for the Portrush and the north coast but for the entire region. Northern Ireland is distinguishing itself as a world leader, not only in the sport of golf, but in course design and support for the sport. It will be wonderful to see such a thrilling event return to the North for the first time since 1951.

“I want to congratulate the management, members and staff at Royal Portrush for their relentless tenacity in pursuing this cause. Following the hugely successful Irish Open, the first time the competition had come north since 1953, few of us were left in any doubt that Portrush could rise to the challenge of the Open Championship.

“As one of golfing’s major championships, hosting The Open will give us the opportunity to again showcase the beautiful landscapes and warm welcome that we have to offer. As the world’s greatest players descend on the north coast we can display Northern Ireland’s potential both on and off the course.

“And of course there’ll be huge home support for Rory, Graeme, Darren and Padraig to take the claret jug back to our shores.”
