Eastwood: Dodds’ comments disrespectful and counterproductive
Mr Eastwood said, “Comments like this from Nigel Dodds are disrespectful to farming homes and communities across Northern Ireland who rely on European Union support for their livelihoods and counter-productive to all efforts to ensure that we deliver a Yes vote in the European referendum.
“Voting to leave the EU would lead to disastrous consequences for Northern Ireland and those who appreciate this danger are right to do all they can to prevent it. These comments from Nigel Dodds reflect a mind-set which reminds us of a time past. As a co-guarantor of the Good Friday Agreement, the Taoiseach has every right to input on issues that affect us here and has done for many years.
“It is also quite normal within the EU for various leaders to visit each other and discuss matters of mutual interest. The Irish and British Governments share a good and constructive relationship, with trade between the UK and Ireland worth £1bn a week and trade between Northern Ireland and the Republic is at least £1.6bn annually.
“Farming families and the business community across Northern Ireland are growing frustrated with DUP flip-flopping on the issue of EU membership. This uncertainty damages trade, puts employment at risk and immediate clarity is required.”
