Durkan: Mesh guidelines must lead to ban

SDLP Health and Mental Wellbeing Spokesperson Mark H Durkan MLA has said that new NICE guidelines on the use of vaginal meshes to treat pelvic organ prolapse must lead to a ban in Northern Ireland. Mr Durkan said that the harrowing experiences of those who have suffered as a result of severe side effects from vaginal meshes must be heard and acted upon.

He said:

“The new NICE guidelines are welcome in that they propose that the use of vaginal meshes in the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse should only take place in a research context and should be subject to advanced consent rules. This is a step forward from the current position which has left many women with severe life altering side effects.

“The guidance, which acknowledges that the current evidence base for the use of mesh implants is inadequate in quality and quantity, must lead to a ban in Northern Ireland. I have spoken to those living with the consequences of these implants, their stories are shocking and should motivate us all to ensure this never happens again.

“These guidelines now require the Permanent Secretary to act and provide clear guidance to clinicians and to those affected by this scandal. I will be seeking that clarity in the weeks ahead.”
