Kelly: Extra funding for policing Brexit welcome but more clarity needed

SDLP Policing and Justice Spokesperson Dolores Kelly MLA has welcomed additional funding for policing in the mouth of Brexit. However, Mrs Kelly, in reiterating the Chief Constable’s warning, said that the need for additional resources in the event of a no-deal/hard border scenario, is only a small part of the overall picture.

Durkan calls for improved replacement to Sure Start Grant

SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan has called for Northern Ireland to implement an improved pregnancy grant similar to the Pregnancy and Baby Payment recently announced in Scotland. The package, which has replaced the Sure Start Grant, helps low income families cover some of the costs associated with having a child. Comprised of three payments during pregnancy and two additional early learning payments thereafter, the grant will be open for applications by Summer 2019.

Attwood: Strategic Policy Resources Committee Reject Anti-Poverty Fund Proposal

SDLP Councillor Tim Attwood has expressed disappointment that his proposal to create an anti-poverty crisis intervention fund was rejected by Sinn Féin and DUP at a meeting of Strategic Policy and Resources Committee today, which was discussing the rate setting process. Instead, £500,000 has been allocated to Summer Intervention Diversionary Fund for area festivals.
