Heading: Electricity price surge will hit low income households

SDLP West Belfast Councillor Brian Heading has said that a 6% price surge for Power NI domestic electricity customers will hurt low income families and push more people into fuel poverty.

He said:

“A 6% surge in electricity prices may seem modest to some, but for many households struggling to break even, it’s a significant additional burden.

“Wholesale energy prices have continued to fall over the last three months but consumers have yet to see a drop in their annual charge. And you can bet, where Power NI have led, other energy companies will follow.

“The real threat here is that more families and vulnerable people in our communities will be forced into fuel poverty. While utility costs rise, many homes will not see a similar rise in their income, meaning that this will be a difficult winter for many.”
