McCrossan: Education Minister must provide support to schools
The West Tyrone MLA said that parents, pupils and teachers need to know that they will be provided with the necessary support to keep people safe.
Daniel McCrossan MLA said:
“The Education Minister has outlined his objective to reopen schools at the beginning of next term, even if on a phased basis. But it’s important that the reopening of schools is done in a way which protects teachers and pupils from transmission of Covid-19. To his credit, I know the Minister understands that.
“It is concerning, however, that while the Minister accepts the argument that many schools will need additional resource, he has written to principals to tell them that there currently is none. It is an impossible position to put school leaders in - setting an objective to open in a few months, acknowledging that it will require investment and then failing to provide it.
“The Minister needs to come forward with a plan to support our schools and keep our young people safe. Arbitrary opening dates with no plan are not good enough.”
