Thomas was first elected to Armagh City and District Council in May 2005, topping the nationalist poll with 891 votes for the Crossmore Ward.
In May 2011 Thomas again topped the poll in Crossmore with 1620 votes becoming the top performing nationalist in the Armagh City and District Council elections. During the year 2006-2007 Thomas served as Deputy Mayor of the Council and became the council’s youngest ever Mayor during 2009-2010.
Thomas joined the SDLP whilst at the University of Ulster at Magee in Derry having heard John Hume speaking to a group of students. Thomas joined the SDLP and became Chairman of the SDLP at Magee before becoming Chairman of the SDLP Youth Group.
As a Councillor, Thomas is currently the SDLP Group Leader on Armagh City and District Council and is Chairman of the Council's Internal Scrutiny Committee. He takes a special interest in planning issues and rural affairs and represents the council on numerous outside bodies.
In addition to his role as a Councillor, Thomas is a Director of Keady Business Centre and Chairman of the Appleby Trust.
In March 2010 Thomas was appointed SDLP spokesperson on Culture and Sport. Since 2007 Thomas has worked as a Parliamentary Assistant to Dominic Bradley MLA, SDLP Assembly Member for Newry and Armagh. Thomas works between the SDLP Offices in Armagh and Newry as well as Stormont. He also operates an advice centre in Keady.
Outside of politics, Thomas is a member of St Mary’s GFC Granemore and a keen supporter of Gaelic games. He enjoys reading, cooking, travelling and visiting Achill Island in Co Mayo.:: Back to Daoine
