At present the SDLP has four female MLAs, including the Minister for Social Development Margaret Ritchie and 25 women councillors. Senior positions within the party including those of General Secretary and International Secretary are held by women.
SDLP Belfast City Councillor Bernie Kelly is the current chair of the SDLP Women's Group.
While all political decisions affect women, certain issues such as equality, childcare, education and domestic violence impact directly on women's lives. Our aim is to ensure these issues are high on the political agenda.
In order to maximise latent skills and talents to enable women to reach their full potential in the party and in public life, training is vital. The Women's Group has organised a number of courses, and training-needs analysis is an ongoing and central part of the life of the group.
A number of women have joined the Party through contact with the Women's Group. We want to build on this.
The main woman's group is Belfast based and membership is open to all woman in the party. Derry has recently formed a women's sub group, something that the party is encouraging throughout other branches. Regional women's groups will provide better accessibility for woman to get together for support and to promote their interests.
The SDLP grew out of the Civil Rights campaign; we have fought against injustice and discrimination throughout our history. This we continue to do and by doing this we will also ensure that woman will hold their rightful place in political life.
