McGrath: Expensive student accommodation is pricing-out students from less affluent backgrounds

SDLP Education Spokesperson Colin McGrath MLA has reiterated his concerns about the high cost of student accommodation in the North after authorities in the South have labelled it a ‘crisis.’ Mr McGrath has said that what students are experiencing in the South is not unique, but rather, more and more students in the North are having to commute long distances from home because accommodation prices are simply unaffordable.

Mallon: We must do more for first-time buyers

SDLP Deputy Leader Nichola Mallon MLA has said that lack of suitable and affordable housing is preventing first-time buyers from getting onto the property ladder. Ms Mallon has called for more to be done after new statistics have shown that home ownership for 18-34 age bracket has dropped from nearly half of all tenures in 2005/06 (49.4%) to less than a third in 2015/16 (31.4%).
