To date the other parties have failed to respond to the worsening economic crisis.
The SDLP understands that people need strong and decisive leadership to see us through these times. That is what we are giving.
At a time when all too many people are losing their jobs, politicians need to be doing ours with determination and imagination.
Firms and families who are struggling to cope need to see the Assembly and Executive doing everything possible to give them help and hope.
That means coming up with new ideas to protect vulnerable households, safeguard existing jobs and create new ones.
The DUP and Sinn Fein have refused to do anything to tackle the recession. They have denied that there is anything they can do. They represent a No We Cant! government. But doing nothing is not an option.
In our discussion document, the SDLP has shown that there is plenty that can be done starting by revising the flawed Budget and Programme for Government to meet new circumstances and challenges.
We have demonstrated that money - £400m - can be found and measures can be taken that will make a real difference for the people we serve.
The SDLP is the party of leadership. We have shown that devolution can make a difference even in these difficult times if the will and the ambition are there.
These proposals are not exhaustive; we will be bringing forward further ideas in the time ahead and would welcome others doing so too.
But they are a starting point to allow Northern Ireland, along with the wider island, to begin our economic fight back and prepare for a more prosperous future.
