Attwood: Kangaroo justice will not rid thugs from our streets

SDLP West Belfast Councillor Tim Attwood has said community engagement and cooperation with the police is the only way to tackle the growing anti-social behaviour problem in his area.

Fri 23rd July

He said: “The community in West Belfast are sick, tired and sore of having to put up with a gang of young hooligans who are terrorising our streets on a nightly basis indulging in anti-social behaviour and causing havoc.

“The only way to eradicate this thuggish element is by people openly and honestly working with the police. Dissident paramilitaries seem to think they can tackle this problem through punishment shootings and beatings but that wasn’t right, nor did it lead to a positive outcome when the IRA did it, and it is still not right today.

“The shooting in St James’ Road is a prime example of this pointless kangaroo justice that is tearing up our community. People in West Belfast have endured enough heartache over the years and do not want this constant terror on their doorsteps. We want these criminals to be brought through the courts system and to be punished properly.

“I appeal to police to consider pumping more resources into West Belfast as they did during the Operation Street Safe exercise which specifically targeted these hoods and significantly reduced the level of crime in area.”
