Attwood welcomes action against Ford over Visteon

SDLP West Belfast Councillor Tim Attwood has welcomed the news that motor giant Ford faces legal action over the pension rights of workers who transferred from Ford to the car parts firm Visteon.

Tue 27th July

Some 3,500 former workers, including workers from the Visteon site in West Belfast, were told they could lose as much as half of their pension entitlements when Ford spin-off Visteon UK went into administration last year.

The UNITE Union has written to Ford saying it will press ahead with legal action if the dispute is not resolved.

Cllr Tim Attwood said: "It was a disgrace that hundreds of workers, many of them close to retirement, were sacked at a minute's notice and lost their pensions. This is a serious injustice. Workers paid into a pension scheme, they were given assurances from Ford and are now being short-changed.

"The SDLP, through the hard work of Alex Attwood MLA and Dr Alasdair McDonnell MP have supported the workers' fight for justice in securing improved redundancy terms. That campaign was successful and the fight for pension's justice begins now.

"It is also important that the Pensions Regulator does all in their power to ensure Ford Visteon honour the commitment it made to its UK workers and that they all receive exactly what they were promised."
