He said: “While it is well documented that people all over Derry are experiencing problems with gangs of drinkers it is very noticeable that as soon as the clocks go forward by an hour and the weather improves there is usually an upsurge in incidents of anti-social behaviour. For that reason it is, once again, necessary to ask parents to make sure that they know where their children are and what they are doing.
“SDLP representatives throughout the city have received a large number of calls from people who are concerned about the activities of large groups of late night drinkers. These people are gathering in alleyways and other communal areas and engaging in all sorts of anti-social behaviour and being a general nuisance to everyone.
“Over the weekend people living in the Branch Road area had to contend with unruly mobs of drinkers congregating on a pathway behind their homes. I have visited the area and it is obvious that these anti-social elements have no thought nor consideration for anyone but themselves. They are lighting fires, destroying property and littering. These delinquent drinkers are unwelcome and their activities should no longer be tolerated. They must understand that they are causing undue anxiety for the elderly and that they are a menace to people with young families and the community in general.
“The SDLP has also contacted Derry City Council which has undertaken to clean up the area and have written to the owner of the land adjacent to the branch asking him to secure the site there.
“Our representatives are continually liaising with the PSNI and we have asked for regular patrols in problem areas throughout the city. Our objective is to find solutions and provide alternative activities for our young people. We believe that simply moving the problem from one area to another is not an answer at all.”
