Byrne: Getting on your bike helps stop cycle of obesity

SDLP Regional Development spokesperson Joe Byrne has spoken in support of the ‘Bike It’ project designed to encourage more schoolchildren to cycle to school.

Tue 31st January

The West Tyrone MLA was speaking after a Regional Development Committee visit to Gilnahirk Primary School, which has been an avid supporter of ‘Bike It’

He said: “In the draft programme for government, a target of 36% of all primary school pupils and 22% of those in secondary education walking or cycling to school was set.

“It makes perfect sense – cycling to school helps keep our children active, which in turn combats childhood obesity, and it reduces the number of cars on our roads.

“So I encourage children across the whole of the North to follow the great example of those in Gilnahirk and get on their bike.”
