Callaghan welcomes commitment to North-West cancer centre

SDLP Foyle MLA and Health Committee member Pól Callaghan has welcomed the Finance Minister’s commitment to invest in the Altnagelvin Radiotherapy Centre in his draft budget.

Mr Callaghan said: “Only yesterday I raised the Altnagelvin Radiotherapy Centre in the Assembly with the Health Minister who told me that his department was ready to proceed with it, pending funding. I therefore welcome Sammy Wilson’s announcement in his draft budget that this vital project will be funded.

 

“For far too long, cancer sufferers in the North-West have had the burden of travel for radiotherapy added to their ordeal. This project will not only alleviate that part of their treatment burden but will also ensure that our region sees world class treatment and research.

 

“The centre is not only a cross-border initiative, but also one to benefit all of Northern Ireland as the Belfast Cancer Centre reaches capacity.

 

“Needless to say, this major construction project will also see the creation of many construction jobs for the hard pressed building sector.”
