Cllr Jim Clifford said: “This has the makings of a huge problem right across the North. We are now moving into Autumn and with the nights closing in we simply can’t afford to have streetlights not being fixed. Broken streetlights will not only increase the risk of road accidents between cars. Darker streets will also place pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchair users in greater danger in the evenings and in nighttime.
“A lot of people will also be worried that there will be more problems with anti-social behaviour as lamps start to break in their areas. Older people are very worried and you can understand why. The streets will be less safe.
“I take on board Roads Service saying they will fix emergencies but that only seems to mean exposed live wires or lampposts that have fallen across the road. The longer this problem goes on the more lights will fall out of use and the worse things will get. I have raised this issue with the Foyle MP Mark Durkan and I know that his office has been in contact with Roads Service too to get action on this.”
