Cllr Durkan: Residents at breaking point over Derry disturbances

SDLP Derry City Councillor Mark H Durkan has said immediate action is required to curb anti-social behaviour in the Lowry’s Lane area of the city.

Sun 5th September

His calls come following two nights of disturbances in the area during which the police came under attack and used CS Spray.

The local councillor said: “Residents in the area have had to endure another two awful nights of noise, nuisance and intimidation as crowds of up to 150 young people from across the city descended on Lowry’s Lane to drink with absolutely no regard for the people living here.

“On both nights, when the police eventually arrived, they were subject to a barrage of missiles and verbal abuse. Last night I witnessed scores of young people drunkenly roaming the streets, urinating publicly and staggering out in front of cars, after being moved on from the lane by residents and police.

“I will be meeting with the police and other community representatives as a matter of urgency. The police need a strategy for tackling this problem in the long term since the area has been plagued by this type of anti-social behaviour on and off for over 15 years.”
