Mr Convery visited the victim at her home on Wednesday morning and said there was no justification for using violence.
He said: “The lady victim of this disgusting attack is a very well respected member of the community. She had worked in various community groups and reconciliation projects over the past number of years long before it was politically correct to do so, and she was continued that fantastic community work to this day. I have no doubt that she will continue the excellent contribution she has made to the North Belfast community after this sickening attack.
“This woman has worked for years trying to build relationships between the communities. There are some people in those communities that might have difficulty with that but there is no need to resort to violent attack. It’s not acceptable and offers nothing to bring about the community we would like to see prosper.
“I urge anybody who has information regarding this attack to report it to the police without delay. Not only is this an attack on a pensioner, it’s an attack on the community, one someone who is carrying out the hard graft on behalf of the community. That is totally unacceptable.”
