Responding to comments by Martin McGuinness, he said: “Even if we are to accept Martin McGuinness’s know-nothing explanations at face value, that still leaves questions to be answered.
“We have heard the British Secretary of State apologise for the failure to pursue justice for the families. We have heard an explanation of sorts from the Catholic church. We have heard the PSNI express regret for RUC investigation failures. The fourth voice, of the Provisional movement, is still missing.
“Even if he knew nothing about Fr Chesney and Claudy, he must know
who does know. He must know that other members of the Provisional movement now calling for a truth commission is nothing short of insulting to the people of Claudy, given that the only people who know the truth are Provisionals. He must know that their continued denials of Provisional involvement are just causing more hurt and pain.
“Even at this late stage, admission of responsibility would still have the capacity to help. People always hope for justice but many of them desperately need the truth - or even a little piece of the truth - as they try to make some sort of sense of events that completely devastated their lives.
“Martin McGuinness as Deputy First Minister has a direct responsibility for dealing with the past. As a former high-ranking Provisional he must have vital information about the past in general, and he is well placed to bring out the truth about Claudy in particular.”
