He said: “This is the peak of the harvest season and thankfully we are getting the weather we need. Farmers and contractors are going flat out to save their crops and that means tractors and heavy machines on the road from early morning until after dark for the next couple of weeks.
“As farmers, we need the understanding and support of the general public. In return, I would call on all farmers and contractors to make sure their vehicles are fully roadworthy and properly equipped with lights including hazard lights, and that weight limits are respected. They should also show due consideration to other road users. It is good practice to pull and let any traffic tailbacks clear whenever conditions permit and there is a suitable lay-by available.
“I would appeal also to other road users to show patience – this won’t last forever, and please, no honking of horns. The man on the tractor ahead of you is trying to make a living for himself and his family and he needs to get that load home as soon as possible and get back out for another one. And please remember – it could be your dinner in that trailer.”
