Dallat delighted at decision to retain Malin Head Coastguard

SDLP East Derry MLA John Dallat has expressed his great delight at the decision by the southern Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Leo Varadkar TD, to keep Malin Head Coastguard Station open.

Wed 28th November

Speaking after the announcement, Mr Dallat said: “I am over the moon at this decision, which shows the triumph of responsibility and common sense over the rash and foolish consultant’s report which recommended the closure of this dedicated and highly impressive facility.

“Malin Head Coastguard Station is the benchmark for cross-border cooperation and care for the safety of all – its work right along the north coast is second to none, and their newly refurbished station is a beacon for coastguard operations everywhere.

“I am so proud that the SDLP was leading the charge to keep Malin Head Coastguard Station open – whether by lobbying ministers on both sides of the border, working tirelessly with supporters to gain access to the decision-makers or by using our party’s annual conference to pass a motion and collect signatures on a petition in support of the station.

“Finally, Minister Varadkar has heeded the wishes of the people, and this station, which has saved lives for a century, can face the coming decades with pride and certainty.

“I wish the station officers well in their work, and assure them of the continued support of the SDLP.”
