Mr Durkan said: "I am acutely aware of the importance of raising awareness of World AIDS Day and educating the public in the fight against HIV-related prejudice. "I will be wearing the red ribbon this week as the international symbol of support for people living with HIV and attending some of the World Aids Day events at Westminster as a member of the All Party Group on AIDS. "The number of people living with HIV continues to increase. Young gay men remain the group most at risk of acquiring HIV, with new diagnoses amongst this group doubling in the last 10 years. "However, while HIV infections are on the increase throughout society the subject is discussed less and less in local or national terms. "Therefore, there is a very real and pressing need for sensitive and sensible messages on sexual health to young people in schools. "I have signed a Parliamentary motion calling on the government to ensure teachers have support and information to be able to talk confidently and sensitively about sexual health in order to meet the needs of all young people, including young gay men. "I am also backing the call to ensure that a new strategy for HIV beyond 2011 includes specific actions to address the needs of young gay men."
