Durkan: Sadness at death of babies in Royal Maternity

SDLP Health Spokesperson Mark H Durkan has expressed sympathy to the families of babies who have died following an infection outbreak in the neo-natal unit of Royal Maternity Hospital.

Fri 20th January

The Foyle MLA said: “The death of these babies is heartwrenching and our thoughts are with their families who must be totally devastated at this time.

“Our thoughts are also with the families of babies who are currently in the unit and expectant parents who are all extremely worried at present.

“We also must be mindful of staff working in the neo-natal unit. While they are used to dealing with sick babies, this nevertheless must be an extremely stressful, traumatic and difficult experience for them.

“I hope that no babies were admitted to the unit after the infection had been identified and I will be querying this with the Health Minister. It is now vital that the source of this infection is established speedily and that this area for little babies is made safe.

“This situation is every parent’s nightmare and it is essential that robust measures are put in place to limit the further spread of this infection and precautions are taken to reduce the risk of these tragedies ever happening again.”
