Durkan: SF/DUP vanity advertising campaign

SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan has criticised the DUP/SF advertising campaign to encourage people to read the Hillsborough Castle Agreement saying it is a phony popular consultation for which the public purse will have to pay.

Tue 16th February

He said: “There must be concern that the public are being treated to this vanity advertising campaign at their own expense simply to indulge the DUP’s pretence about significant community consultation and confidence.

“I think that the general public attitude is that it is great that there is a deal, even though they don’t know much about it and people want an end to all the messing around and posing by Sinn Féin and the DUP.

“This advertising campaign doesn’t answer any of the questions about the gaps in the Hillsborough text or the private understandings reached or undertakings given.

“It is doubtful whether those who respond to the campaign will get such questions answered.

“The ad is really doing a ‘here are some of your best bits from the big Hillsborough house’ for the First and Deputy First Ministers.

“Given that they have been so partisan in much of their presentation on the deal and given that the ad is so personalised on them, someone in the system should have questioned its propriety so close to the General Election.

“Questions have to be asked as to how this campaign was initiated?

What official advise was sought and given? What cost considerations were defined? The procurement process and how the content was approved for public expense at this time?

“This is not just a time of sensitivity due to the proximity of the election, but also because of budget constraints with so many agencies and groups being told that they can no longer afford worthwhile thanks.”
