“I am glad to be able to join union representatives in the delegation to senior Arntz management in Germany this week.
“Arntz Derry workers have been a committed and reliable workforce who are entitled to seek better than what is now facing them.
“It must be remembered that the closure proposal has nothing to do with any performance issues in Derry, nor does it arise because the company is having market losses. There is no suggestion that this close down has anything to do with the recession. The company could continue to afford to operate the local plant profitably and productively. Arntz and its parent group Optibelt owe the workforce that it is choosing to make redundant a more reasonable package.
“As a local elected representative, I want to support shop stewards and union officials in pointing out that the terms offered by Arntz do not compare that well with some other packages locally, including firms who could have argued that they were in a much tighter situation in terms of financial and market pressures.
"The Derry workforce have served this company loyally and faithfully. As it withdraws, management have an onus to reciprocate the loyalty and good faith which their workers have always shown.
"I therefore look forward to Arntz representatives being open to the very sound arguments which we intend to put to them.”
