Durkan welcomes Derry’s purple flag status

SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan has congratulated local businesses and Derry City Council and on their efforts to secure Derry’s purple flag status.

He said: “It is fantastic to see Derry being recognised for providing a high quality and enjoyable night time experience through this purple flag award.

 

“This is particularly welcome given the negative portrayals of Derry in the media in the past year which did little to improve the image of our city.

 

“This award is a great credit to local businesses and to Derry City Council who have worked tirelessly to bring forward initiatives to curb anti-social behaviour, improve cleanliness and provide a good mix of venues and attractions for both local people and visitors.

 

“Our new purple flag status will also put us in a better position to draw investment to Derry and will undoubtedly be a positive aspect for businesses considering whether or not to set up here.

 

“It should also enhance Derry's burgeoning reputation as a great tourist destination and help attract more visitors.”
