Eastwood: CSI consultation confirms inherent flaws

SDLP OFMDFM spokesperson Colum Eastwood says the consultation responses to the CSI strategy confirm the inherent flaws within the original document.

The Foyle MLA was commenting after the media gained access to the consultation. The CSI consultation has only come into the public domain a full year after its composition. A revised strategy and action plan for CSI are due to be discussed and agreed in the coming months.

Mr Eastwood said: “The SDLP has been consistently critical of the draft CSI proposals. The ethos and aspiration of the original CSI document highlighted that the DUP and Sinn Féin were committed more to the purposes of political expediency than to the objective of a truly shared future.

“It is an unhappy irony, and a sad reflection upon our current institutions, that many of the respondents to the CSI proposals believed it to be inferior to the ‘A Shared Future’ document produced by a British Direct Rule Minister. It is abundantly clear therefore that community confidence does not rest within the CSI document in its current form.

“The CSI document needs to be radically altered in the coming months. A shared future is not another executive issue which can be placed on the long finger. A true and fruitful CSI strategy should deal with the totality of the historical and current divisions in the North as well as on the island as a whole.

“The responses to the CSI draft proposals demonstrate that there is huge job of work to be undertaken in the coming to fulfil this ambition. The all-party working group on CSI will hopefully provide the opportunity to conduct this radical alteration in the coming months.”
